| Compost is the rich ingredient for healthy soil and productive gardens. Compost adds many beneficial bacteria and microbes to your soil. The bacteria aides in organically decomposing existing materials and, when in balance, fighting off harmful bacteria. A healthy soil is indicated when a population of earthworms is present. They complete the cycle by providing valuable "castings" as they work their way through the soil.
Prepare your garden this spring by working in 2" of compost into the soil as deep as you can. Mix it in well with a roto-tiller or by turning over with a shovel. This should be done two weeks before planting. Then every spring, add an additional ½ to 1" layer of compost to the garden and work in. It will take approximately 17 cubic feet of compost to cover a 100 square foot garden.
If you are not already making your own compost, we have included directions for starting this environmentally friendly product!
Compost Quick & Easy
Select a sunny, level, well drained site away from ponds, streams or other drainage areas. Construct a ‘bin’ to contain your refuse; wood, woven fence or plastic snow fencing works well. An appropriate size would be 4 x 4 x 4, with access for adding and removing material. Collect organic yard refuse, using 2 (two) groups GREEN: grass clippings, (high in Nitrogen) and DRY: leaves (high in carbon). Layer by alternating GREEN and DRY with garden soil in-between the two. Water well. Continue to add materials as they become available. Turn your pile once a week. In a month, you will have a rich usable compost for your garden. Your compost will have an earthy smell when ready to use.
